Dr. Decastro completed 22 cataracts surgeries during 3 days in the course of the mission week with additional surgeries to be scheduled and completed subsequently. Our sponsor, Sove Lavi, arranged transportation for surgical patients to Port au Prince from Pont Sonde. One day post-op evaluations were completed by the VOSH team in Pont Sonde.

All members of our team did a phenomenal job throughout the duration of this mission trip; the entire team worked tirelessly and cohesively, often under very challenging circumstances. I sincerely thank each of you for your effort…it was my privilege to have you all on board!

Many thanks to Dr. Pierre-Yves Decastro for his excellent cooperation and support in providing surgical care for our patients!

I’d like to recognize our translators: Pierre Schnider (head translator), Witny Etienne, Samy Stevens, Jean Belony, Perone Kences and Sandie Colas. They did a wonderful job of helping the VOSH team communicate with their patients as well as the community at large, and they were a pleasure to work with!

Thank you to the staff of Clotaire Hotel in Pont Sonde. The accommodations were comfortable, the environment secure and welcoming, and the food very good!

Last but not least, I would like to extend my gratitude to our mission sponsors, Mr. Dumas Simeus and Sove Lavi, for their very substantial logistical and financial support. Along with the constant guidance and support from our trip coordinator, Ms. Vanessa Brown, this mission could not have been successful. I sincerely thank you!

It was my privilege to lead this mission trip. I hope our team was able to have some positive impact on the people of Haiti in at least some small way.

Respectfully submitted,
Dr. Mark Shust

VOSH Pa mission to Cap Haitien November 2017

Team:  Dr. Marianne Banales, Dr. Suzanne Ward, Dr. Krystal Schull, Dr. Diane Wilson, four optometry students: Krystyna Golden, Jasmine Hayes, Iqra Quddus and Angeline Simeus.  Two lay persons: Michael Brookshire and Kathryn Ward.

Location: Vertiere, Tierre Rugue, Lory, Nouvelle Generation in Cap and Tru de Nord

Total patients: 1,119

Cataract referrals: 50
Glaucoma referrals: 82
Other:  4
We referred glaucoma to Milot since the new ophthalmologist can now do SLT.

We referred cataracts to Vision Plus since there won’t be a surgery team at Milot until mid january

One referral was a px with a bandage CL that had been placed on the 5 yrs ago.  Unfortunately this resulted in blindness with an opaque cornea and extensive neovas.

We removed one corneal foreign body.

Nine of us (who ate the salad at Mont Joli) became sick mid-week.  DO NOT EAT THE SALAD at MONT JOLI, and pack plenty of immodium!

The team were troopers and we saw all the patients who were scheduled.  Some days were light due to rain and flooding.

Joseph did a fabulous job as always. Savio is a new interpreter who was awesome and learned VA’s and dispensing very quickly.

We shipped readers to 4 team members since the shipment would not be there in time and the team members carried them.
